On the 20th of May, 1493, the Catholic monarchs granted Christopher Columbus the priviledge of his coat of arms: Quartered, 1st, a castle of gold, 2nd, a lion of purple, 3rd, azure waves, gold islands and 4th the primitive weapons characteristic of this lineage.
The modern arms: 1, a castle of gold, 2 silver, a lion rampant, 3 rd wave azure and silver and gold including several islands, and 4th Azure, five gold anchors posts and looped with the point turned to the right, and a gold point with a band of azure. Bordered in gold with the motto in letters of azure "To Castile and Leon Columbus gave a new world."
